I have had a similar feeling with returning to watercolor, although my emotions are flipped—the physical sometimes feels more playful while the digital feels like “work”. I also really related to the idea of materials holing memories and moments frozen in time. When I finally turned back to watercolor (a medium I avoided for the better part of a decade) it felt like coming back to a younger and more untamed version of myself, with all the mixed emotions that entails. Thank you for your vulnerability. It prompted me to think about my relationship to various mediums again.
Also super curious about the meaning behind the ghost ants—I love them. Inspiring as always :)
Thank you for sharing this with me :) I think digital work feels so playful and free for me right now because I am super comfortable and in my element with it. I've got my brushes and my colors picked out and I don't feel limited in terms of only working with what I have. (although limiting yourself can create fun results)
As for the Ghost Ants...... I had no concept of how many ants there would be in Utah when I moved here, I have had so many camping trips where I've sat in the wrong spot and BAM everything is covered in ants, backpack ants, chips ANTS, sleeping bag MORE ANTS. I feel like once I start finding them on me I spend the rest of the time there feeling like they are on me.
Ahhh I had no idea! I love Utah, but have not experienced the ant explosion in my travels. The Midwest (where I live) is another story though. Great childhood memories of watching an absolute parade of ants weave its way toward a dropped French fry that is later completely covered.
I definitely think physical limits help a bit with a bumper that creates play and invention. I think the other part for me is that I spend daytime working in a more corporate studio wearing a graphic designer hat . Finding a flow in procreate that feels more organic (less vectory) has been a fun challenge in the last several months. Excited to get back to sharing here now that I’m starting to find my way again. Having go-to brushes definitely helped with that!
Hope you are having a wonderful evening, and can’t wait for your next post :)
